Frequently Asked Questions

No worries, we had the same questions our first time.

How long will my scan take?

You'll be booked for a 15-minute time slot. The actual scan takes 35 seconds and just over a minute to process the results. The rest of your session we want to make sure you have time to walk through the health results and use the powerful software to set your measurable goals.

What can't I do before my scan?

Nothing! You're not limited on what you eat and drink before a Styku scan.

What do I need to wear?

Styku will measure what the scanner sees, and doesn't see through clothing! To get the best 3D scan of your body, wear form-fitting or shape-revealing clothing.

We suggest a sports bra and leggings for women, and bike shorts or boxer briefs for men. Compression clothes also work well, but try not to have it so tight that it pushes your body around too much. The goal is to allow Styku to see the shapes and curves of your body, to measure it accurately. If you have long hair, you'll have to put it in a bun up off of your neck.

The wrinkles and folds of a loose shirt or baggy shorts can mask changes to your body, and will make it hard to accurately track progress as you lose fat and your body's shape and size changes.

Is it possible to "cheat" Styku's body fat system and get a lower or higher body fat %?

Styku is not an x-ray machine, and will measure what it sees - the shape and size of the human body. Here are some common ways it's possible to "game the system" and introduce inaccuracies in your scans, along with ways to avoid these issues.

1. Bad posture can lead to more error in scan measurements. Styku measures the body it sees, so if the customer slouches, or pushes out their belly area, they can affect the way their body is measured.

2. Loose clothing can inflate measurements and produce an incorrect body fat %. We suggest a sports bra and leggings for women, and bike shorts or boxer briefs for men. Compression clothes also work well. The goal is to allow Styku to see the shapes and curves of your body, to measure it accurately.

Is the sensor harmful or invasive? Can people with pacemakers be scanned? Can I scan pregnant people?

The Kinect sensor used in the Styku scanner emits harmless infrared light, similar to that used in a remote control. It is completely non-invasive and safe to use.

The IR light coming from the sensor does not affect human tissue, and won’t affect people with pacemakers or other medical conditions. It is safe to be exposed to and even look at.

Think of it like a flashlight emitting light, just in a wavelength we as humans can’t really see with our eyes. Other devices that use the same kind of light are remote controls, cordless PC mice, baby video monitors, and the Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone.

For a more technical answer, the sensor is classified as a Class 1 Laser, which is “safe under all conditions of normal use”, and is the safest of all laser classes : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_safety#Class_1

Will breast implants affect my body fat % results?

Styku Phoenix doesn't use the chest region to determine body fat %, so your chest shape will not affect the results.

Breast implants will not affect the Styku body fat % calculation because we don’t use the chest measurement to calculate body fat % for women. It could certainly impact another method of calculating body fat, though, and the results may be different in one of the other systems than in Styku’s, certainly.

For example, the Jackson-Pollock method for determining body fat % via calipers uses a chest skinfold that could definitely be impacted by implants. The resulting caliper-based body fat % value would be different as a result.

Frequently Asked Questions

No worries, we had the same questions our first time.

What are the benefits of cold plunging?

Cold plunging benefits include improved circulation, enhanced mood and mental clarity, releases endorphins, boosted immune system, increased metabolism, and more.

Do I need to bring anything with me for my cold plunge session?

You’ll be in your own private space for your session. You’re welcome to bring a swimsuit, or not. Whatever is your preference. If you prefer to use your own towel you’re welcome to as well, but we will have a towel available for you in the studio.

How long should I stay in the cold plunge pool?

The recommended duration for a cold plunge session is typically between 3-5 minutes. It is always important to listen to your body and not overextend your time in the cold water.

Is the cold plunge sanitary?

Yes, our cold plunge has a two stage filtration system with mesh strainer plus a 20-micron particulate filter. In addition, there is an automated ozone sanitation system for natural water purification. And between regularly water changes, we use a chlorine-free spa treatment system from sirona spa care to ensure you have a sanitary experience. We also

What Is A Cold Plunge?

A cold plunge is a therapeutic treatment offered at a wellness studio, where you immerse your body into a cold pool of water. The temperature typically ranges from 37-50°F, creating an invigorating and revitalizing experience that helps enhance circulation, boost metabolism, and support overall health and wellness.

Is this different from an ice bath?

Not really. Both therapies offer similar health and wellness benefits. An ice bath though, does not typically have a filtration and santitation system like our cold plunge at Imperfect Mastery wellness studio. Plus, cold plunges have chilling machines that regulate the temperature so you can be sure you’re experiencing the full effect.

Do you use chlorine?

Nope, we work hard to maintain a chlorine free plunge. We use sirona spa care treatments to avoid that chlorine feeling on your skin.

What should i do after a plunge?

The Soeberg Principle based on deliberate cold researcher Dr. Susanna Soeberg is: To enhance the metabolic effects of cold, force your body to reheat on its own. Or “End With Cold.” Also, allowing your body to shiver may enhance metabolic increases from cold. Shivering causes the release of succinate from muscles and further activates brown fat thermogenesis.

Try this protocol to increase shivering, either during or immediately after cold exposure: Don’t huddle or cross your arms while in the cold or after getting out. Also, don’t towel off. Let your body reheat and dry off naturally.

How often should I use the cold plunge service for the best results?

Consider doing deliberate cold exposure for 11 minutes per week TOTAL. NOT per session, but rather, 2-4 sessions lasting 1-5 mins each distributed across the week. Again, the water temperature should be uncomfortably cold yet safe to stay in for a few minutes. You can do more, but this should be the minimum to achieve the benefits of cold exposure.

You can do very cold, very brief exposures for adrenaline release too, but the 11 minutes is based on a recent study by Susanna Søberg that explored a range of effects and is a good solid, basic protocol for ongoing use.

Is it safe for everyone to use the cold plunge?

Cold plunge therapy is safe for most people; however, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions such as Raynaud's disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or cardiovascular issues. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before trying cold plunge services, especially if you have any underlying health concerns.

The number one thing to remember each time you plunge is that when you get in that icy water, work to control your breathing.
